Chapter fifteen

Hunter

One Month Later

Two weeks is too long between Trudy hookups. Sure, I’d like my benefits more regularly than once a fortnight, but the killer is that I don’t get to even see her or speak to her between them. This time, it’s only been four days since we last met in another hotel room, and I’m seriously suffering from Trudy withdrawal symptoms.

We had another evening of amazing sex, followed by champagne in a bubble bath. We talked for about an hour, or at least until the water got cold and our fingers and toes shriveled up. We then moved to the bed for another sexy session, cuddling naked together after. Again, I thought she was going to stay the night, but then, at two in the morning, she got up, dressed, and left me alone.

With each time I see Trudy, the days between get harder, so this time, I did something about it. First thing this morning, I texted Blake and asked him if he wanted to go to lunch today. And here I am, stepping out of the elevator at the offices of Cybersec, earlier than agreed upon, for my lunch with Blake. All so I can see Trudy for a few minutes.

Bec looks up from her desk, her eyebrows raised as I approach. “Hi, Bec, how are you?”

“Hunter, this is a surprise. Blake didn’t mention you were dropping in.”

“Lunch … Blake and I are going to lunch. It was a last-minute thing.” I’m trying to act all cool and casual, but as I stand there shuffling my feet like a schoolboy waiting outside the principal’s office, I imagine she can tell something is up. “Ummm … is Trudy in?”

She nods at me, and when a smile creeps across her face, I get the impression I’ve given away my true reason for dropping into the office.

I hope I have an ally in Bec and smile back. “Could you ask her to meet me in the conference room?”

Bec’s smile vanishes as she says, “Hunter, she’s my best friend.” Maybe she’s not as much of an ally as I thought.

“Please, Bec, can you just check with her? I want to ask her something, and it makes sense to do it in person since I’m here anyway.”

“Fine. If you want to wait in the room, I’ll send her in.” I stride down the hallway more confidently, entering the conference room and leaving the door open.

It looks like the room has been set up for an afternoon meeting, and I lean across the rectangular, glossy table to take a glass and pour water from the pitcher. A dozen black leather-backed chairs are neatly pushed up to the polished table and rather than sit in one, I take a sip of water and walk over to look out the large window to the hazy view of Roosevelt Island.

The sound of heels clicking on the wooden floor of the corridor has me turning. Trudy hovers in the open doorway, then, stepping into the room,
